This article presents a brief reference to the historical evolution of two political-electoral rights that have been central to the history of our country: the right to vote and the right to be elected. This essay seeks to provide elements to understand the transition from indirect election and limited voting rights given to citizens who met certain characteristics to direct election and a universal vote. Finally, this article attempts to contribute to the reflections about the evolution of these rights. It is through a historical-electoral approach that one has the opportunity to assess the national advancement related of suffrage, which has allowed the stability and respect of popular sovereignty, based on a universal, free and secret vote from the citizens and their inalienable right to be elected for office.En este artículo se presenta una breve referencia a la evolución histórica de dos derechos político-electorales que han sido fundamentales en la historia de nuestro país: el derecho a votar y el derecho a ser votado. A lo largo de este ensayo se busca ofrecer elementos para comprender la transición de una elección indirecta y un derecho a votar limitado a ciudadanos que cumplían con determinadas características, a una elección directa y a un voto universal. Finalmente, se pretende contribuir a la reflexión sobre la evolución de los citados derechos, pues es a través de una investigación con un enfoque histórico-electoral como se tiene la oportunidad de valorar el avance nacional en materia electoral que ha permitido la estabilidad y el respeto a la soberanía popular, basándose en el voto universal, libre y secreto de los ciudadanos, y en su derecho inalienable para acceder a los cargos de elección popular.
