This article after analyzes the origins and fundamental characteristics of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, explores its use in the judgments (contentious cases) of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. It concludes that despite the political origin of this regional instrument and having as primary end the collective defense of democracy, this Court has established itself as an important document in the interpretation of the political rights recognized in the American Convention on Human Rights. In this sense, exist a friendly relationship between the IDC and the ACHR that has contributed to a broader understanding of these rights, encouraging new developments.El presente trabajo, después de analizar los orígenes y características esenciales de la Carta Democrática Interamericana, indaga su uso en las sentencias (casos contenciosos) de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos. Se concluye que a pesar del origen político de este instrumento regional y teniendo como fin primario la defensa colectiva de la democracia, este tribunal la ha posicionado como un documento relevante en la interpretación de los derechos políticos reconocidos en la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos. En este sentido, existe una relación benéfica entre la CDI y la CADH que ha contribuido a un entendimiento más amplio de estos derechos, favoreciendo nuevos desarrollos.
