DescriptionIn this article, Ruiz Miguel reflects upon the limits of democracy, understood in a liberal sense, and tries to highlight the principal traits that characterize and justify the democratic system of government just the way we understand it and practice it today. To reach a conclusion, the writer asserts that there are relatively complex and gradual criteria that consider an ideal model of democracy and diffused limits in the application of this ideal to reality. In this sense, the writer identifies two paradoxes and one dilemma: the paradox of the pure democrat, the paradox of the true liberal and the dilemma of the perfect liberal democrat. The above mentioned serves to demonstrate that the liberal-democratic system puts in play different types of rights which produce continuous tension between civil and political rights, or, better yet, between the liberal and democratic principal.en-US
DescriptionEn este artículo, Ruiz Miguel reflexiona sobre los límites de la democracia, entendida en un sentido liberal y suprapartidario, e intenta poner de relieve los principales rasgos que caracterizan y justifican el sistema democrático de gobierno tal y como hoy lo entendemos y lo practicamos. Para llegar a una conclusión, el autor sostiene que existen criterios relativamente complejos y graduales que presuponen un modelo ideal de democracia, y límites difusos en la aplicación de ese ideal a la realidad. En este sentido, el autor identifica dos paradojas y un dilema: la paradoja del demócrata puro, la paradoja del verdadero liberal y el dilema del demócrata liberal perfecto. Lo anterior sirve para demostrar que el sistema democrático-liberal pone en juego distintos tipos de derechos, lo que produce una continua tensión entre los derechos civiles y políticos, o bien, entre el principio liberal y el democrático.es-ES
