DescriptionEnvironmental defenders are people, who, by their activity in defense of the environment and the reporting of environmental injustices, suffer harassment, threats, victimization and even murder. Environmental defenders are defenders of human rights, persons acting individually or collectively to contribute to environmental protection and defending human rights of victims of environmental degradation. Their situation is particularly alarming in Latin America: therefore is this important to analyze the work of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in this field, first, as the first court to recognize and protect environmental defenders, contributing to visualize their situation, and secondly, to defend the most vulnerable groups against environmental degradation. The aim of this paper is to analyze the case law developed by the Court in defense of human rights defenders in general and environmental defenders, in particular.en-US
DescriptionLos defensores ambientales son personas que, por su actividad de defensa del medio ambiente y denuncia de las injusticias ambientales, sufren hostigamientos, amenazas, persecuciones e inclusive asesinatos. Los defensores ambientales son defensores de los derechos humanos, personas que actúan individual o colectivamente para contribuir a la protección ambiental y defender los derechos humanos de las víctimas de la degradación del medio ambiente. Su situación en Latinoamérica es especialmente alarmante: es por este motivo importante analizar la labor de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos en este ámbito, por una parte, por ser el primer tribunal en reconocer y proteger a los defensores ambientales contribuyendo a visibilizar su situación, y por otra, por defender de los grupos más vulnerables frente la degradación ambiental. El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar la jurisprudencia elaborada por la Corte en defensa de los defensores de derechos humanos en general y de los defensores ambientales, en particular.es-ES
