The definition of the state has its origin in law, which in turn is linked to man. In this context, the state is understood as the subject or unit of the legal order in which social life takes place. This article discusses the role of the state in modern society through an analysis of the problems it must face in order to survive and prevail. The challenges that a state must face are many; however, the author emphasizes that the main problems are related to the nature of the state itself. The association of citizens in different political parties and, in particular, the formation of subversive groups that threaten the law have always posed a challenge to social stability. At this point, the author emphasizes that revolution is justified only when a state has placed particular interests above the common good. Other issues may arise from the relationship between church and state, which must be based on a cooperative bond to reduce conflict, and from the pursuit of peace through the avoidance of unnecessary military conflict and other situations that threaten the common good, justice, and rights. In conclusion, the article analyzes the relationship between the state and modern society and offers an approach aimed at effectively solving social problems.La definición de Estado encuentra su origen en el derecho y este último, a su vez, se halla concatenado al ser humano. En ese contexto, un Estado se concibe como aquel sujeto o unidad del sistema jurídico en el cual se realiza la vida en sociedad. Este artículo aborda el papel del Estado en la sociedad moderna mediante un análisis de los problemas que debe enfrentar para subsistir y prevalecer. Las vicisitudes que afronta un Estado son diversas; sin embargo, el autor destaca que los principales problemas guardan relación con la naturaleza propia de los Estados. Así también, la agrupación de los ciudadanos en diversos partidos políticos y, especialmente, la conformación de grupos subversivos que amenazan la justicia siempre ha significado un desafío para la estabilidad social. En este punto, el autor remarca que una revolución solo estará justificada cuando un Estado haya interpuesto los intereses particulares sobre el bien común. Otros inconvenientes pueden surgir de la relación entre la Iglesia y el Estado, la misma que debe basarse en un vínculo de cooperación para reducir los enfrentamientos; así como la búsqueda de la paz evitando cualquier conflicto bélico innecesario, y demás situaciones que atentan contra el bienestar común, la justicia y los derechos. En conclusión, el artículo analiza la relación entre el Estado y la sociedad moderna, ofreciendo un enfoque orientado a cómo abordar los problemas sociales de manera eficaz.
