Firstly, the situation of criminal procedure in the region is examined, previous to the wave of reform that has recently occurred in the region. Secondly, the process of reform is described, and the sources of the reform are identified. Finally, the authors review the possibilities of criminal justice reform in order to solve some social problems linked to this matter. Se analiza primero la situación del proceso penal en la región, con anterioridad a la ola de reformas que se han venido experimentando. Posteriormente, se describe el proceso de reforma, y se identifican los impulsos a los que éste ha respondido. Finalmente, se analizan las posibilidades de la reforma de la justicia penal para resolver algunos de los problemas sociales vinculados con este tema.
