DescriptionIn this commentary, the author discusses the recent publication by Kamila Lis (Coalitions in the Jungle), an article which summarizes the situation of farm animal welfare in the United States over the course of the 20th Century. Lis´ vision of the history of farm animal welfare is closely correlated with the rise, descent and resurrection of market power concentration of meat packing and processing industry. The author of the commentary discusses how the externalities from this concentration are imposed on to many actors outside the industry and that these could be fertile ground for cooperative work among advocates for animal welfare even though it may entail collaborating with groups with only tangential interests.en-US
DescriptionEn este comentario, el autor analiza la reciente publicación de Kamila Lis, Coalitions in the Jungle, un artículo que resume la situación del bienestar animal de los animales de granja en los Estados Unidos a lo largo del siglo 20. La visión de la autora sobre la historia del bienestar animal, está estrechamente relacionada con el aumento, descenso y resurrección de la concentración del poder de mercado de la industria de la carne (producción, embalaje y procesamiento). El autor del comentario explica la manera en la que las externalidades de la concentración económica han afectado a muchos de los actores ajenos la industria y que ésta situación puede constituirse en un terreno fértil para un trabajo conjunto entre los afectados y los defensores del bienestar animal, a pesar de que implique la cooperación entre actores con intereses tangenciales.es-ES
