​By combining the analysis of 1,298 letters of manumission registered in Lima between 1840 and 1854, and information from numerous cases of litigation and negotiation between masters and slaves, this article questions previous interpretations in the sense that, 1) the abolition of slavery was either something enforced from the outside or a grace from Castilla, and 2) that the slaves had neither the interest on their freedom nor the capacity for challenging the power of their masters. The picture emerging from this study is one of a great pugnacity in the pursue of their freedom, the use of a variety of strategies for achieving their goals, and the evidence that the disintegration of slavery in Peru was, to a great extent, the result of the many forms of slave resistance.Combinando el análisis de 1,298 cartas de manumisión registradas en Lima entre 1840 y 1854, y la información proveniente de numerosos casos de litigio y negociación entre amos y sus dueños, este artículo intenta cuestionar interpretaciones previas en el sentido de que, 1) la abolición de la esclavitud fue impuesta desde afuera o fue una dádiva de Castilla, y 2) que los esclavos no tuvieron ni el interés de conseguir su libertad, ni la capacidad para cuestionar el poder de sus amos. La imagen que resulta de este estudio es la de una gran pugnacidad por parte de los esclavos para conseguir su libertad, el uso de una variedad de estrategias para conseguir sus fines, y la constatación de que la desintegración de la esclavitud en el Perú fue el resultado, en gran medida, de las diversas formas de resistencia de los esclavos.
