This commentary discusses the reform to article 116 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, which involved the addition of a clause that empowers the legislatures of the federal entities to legislate on their states symbols, namely, coats or arms, flags, and anthems. It also explores the relationships of this new power with other international and legal provisions applicable in Mexico concerning cultural heritage.En este comentario se expone la reforma al artículo 116 de la Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, que consistió en la adición de un inciso por el cual se faculta a las legislaturas de las entidades federativas a legislar sobre sus símbolos estatales, es decir, escudos, banderas e himnos. También se expone la relación de la nueva facultad con otros ordenamientos internacionales y legales sobre patrimonio cultural.
