This article is about the relationship between the birth of divorce as an institution in the Republican Rome and the appearance, for the husband, of the obligation of dowry restitution. The case of Spurio Carvilio Ruga is specially studied, whose divorce, according to tradition, was the first to be practiced in Rome's history.El artículo trata de la relación que existe entre el nacimiento del divorcio como institución en Roma republicana y el surgimiento, para el marido, de la obligación de restituir la dote. Se estudia especialmente el caso de Spurio Carvilio Ruga, cuyo divorcio, según la tradición, fue el primero en practicarse en la historia de Roma.
