The present work makes an approach to the historical evolution of penitentiary architecture and how it has influenced the forms of punishment or rehabilitation of inmates. The author explains that penitentiary architecture is that science that combines prison and architectural knowledge that adapts to the norms of each site. To this extent, the author compares the primitive prisons that only served to isolate and overcrowd prisoners, compared to the penitentiary architectural revolution that began in the eighteenth century, with penitentiary establishments that have a humanitarian approach and whose objective was to rehabilitate inmates. This situation allowed the implementation of various architectural systems in penitentiary centers, which are analyzed in detail in this article. In this way, the reader will be able to understand that penitentiary architecture has varied throughout history, but it has mainly reflected how such architecture has responded to the demands and needs of each era.El presente trabajo realiza una aproximación a la evolución histórica de la arquitectura penitenciaria y cómo ello ha influido en las formas de castigo o rehabilitación de los reos. El autor explica que la arquitectura penitenciaria es aquella ciencia que combina los conocimientos carcelarios y arquitectónicos que se adapta a las normas de cada sitio. En esa medida, el autor compara las cárceles primigenias que solo servían para aislar y hacinar a los prisioneros, frente a la revolución arquitectónica penitenciaria que nace en el siglo XVIII, con establecimientos penitenciaros que tienen un enfoque humanitario y cuyo objetivo era rehabilitar a los reclusos. Esta situación permite la implementación de diversos sistemas arquitectónicos en los centros penitenciarios, los cuales son analizados a detalle en este artículo. De esta manera, el lector podrá comprender que la arquitectura penitenciaria ha logrado variar a lo largo de la historia, pero principalmente se ha reflejado cómo dicha arquitectura ha respondido a las exigencias y necesidades de cada época.
